Wrestling Camp Feedback

Seeds were planted. The camp was great. GCU's coaching staff did an amazing job and they brought their athletes which was a huge addition to the experience for the kids.

We only ended up with 25 kids. Tucson brings 10 every year, but couldn't pull any together this year so we missed out on them. Prescott always has brought down 5 or 10, and they did not have a coach available to drive this year. There were also a few kids that signed up that just didn't show.

I'm not worried about it. GCU's players and coaches as well as all of our campers heard the gospel, received a sports New Testament, some food, and a T-shirt. It was a good day.

As with every event, looking back at it, I can see where things can be done better next year.

Thank you for those that were praying!

Dobson week 4

This morning's Dobson coaches' study was great. Smaller group, but better discussion. This morning's question: Are we using our platform, time, energy, effort, talents, and opportunities to build our own kingdom (our program)? or God's kingdom?

We talked a lot about servant leadership, and the assignment this week is to wipe our coaching slates clean and ask God what He wants our programs to look like. They are going to pray, read His Word, and make a list of the things they want to do differently this year with the intent of building God's kingdom.

I look forward to hearing the creative ways that they want to be different.

What could God do with $30 this month?

This month, it would pay for two wrestlers to go to a college wrestling camp and learn from a national champion and a two-time all-American. The two kids would get a t-shirt, New Testament, and lunch. They would get to hang out with Christian college athletes and hear one of them share how Jesus Christ has impacted his life. Finally, they would hear the gospel, explained clearly straight out of the word of God.

This month, it would pay for one night of pizza with the MCC baseball team. An opportunity to get the players together to dive deeper into the Word of God. Asking players to come to a Bible study after a long day of school and practice might be a hard sell, but asking the kids to come eat dinner after practice while we discuss faith, God, Jesus, and how it all relates to their lives as a college athlete is a lot easier.

Please pray about becoming a monthly contributor to the FCA Sports Camp Ministry in Arizona. There is a mission field in your backyard.
I am praying for 10 people this month that will join our home team with a $30/month commitment. Do you know anyone?

Big Week, please pray

Thurs. will start my first chapel with the Phoenix Desert Dawgs. The Dawgs play in the Arizona Fall league. This league has been the stepping stone to the big leagues for many of MLB's biggest stars. The Dawgs are made up of the top prospects from 6 different organizations. Oakland A's, Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, AZ Dbacks, and the Colorado Rockies. I will be offering a 15 min. chapel to the players once per week. Pray for me.

Friday will be my first Bible study with the Mesa Community College baseball team. I have been helping out with some practices and in the weight room at 5 AM. Hanging out with the guys has been a great time to build relationships and be accepted in as an "insider." I told the guys what my job was and how I would love to start a study with the team. There was about 8 that said they were interested. Pray for Friday mornings.

Saturday, we have our wrestling camp. The Grand Canyon University wrestling coach and his players will be handling the clinic. I will have David Islas, one of GCU's wrestlers (and one of our summer camp huddle leaders) share a little about his faith, and then I will share the gospel. I'm very excited, but also praying that God would bring more kids. Right now we have about 15 signed up and we should really have 50 by the end of the week. Keep this in your prayers.

Marketplace One

We just had a lunch with everyone on the 7th floor. The owners of the building office with us along with a few other Christian non-profits all on the 7th floor.

It was a great time to meet these Christian men who have integrated their faith into their calling to the market place. I suggest you learn more about these guys. It is fascinating what they are doing.

Our calling is to the athletic field. We minister to the athlete, coach, and fan. We talk about integrating faith into what happens on the field. These fellas are so similar. They've been called to a different arena, the business world, and their vision is to use their gifts and passions in the marketplace to build the kingdom.

No matter what your gifts, passion, and expertise is, the Lord can use it to build His kingdom.

Awesome lunch!

funding the camp ministry

An FCA Home team is a group of supporters that have committed to help fund the ministry. I am not looking for people who just want to support Brian (Me), but those that catch the vision of where FCA Camp Ministry is headed.

My funding plan:
  • Asking God to fund the ministry through His people that have a heart for coaches and athletes.
  • Getting sponsors for our camping events that will underwrite our expenses allowing us to lower the price and bring in revenue that will help fund my salary.
  • Creating a Home Team that will support the FCA camp ministry. This too, will help lower the price of our events, making camps more affordable for every community.

Leaving a Legacy:

  • When the day comes that I leave this ministry, I want to have an existing funding plan working for the next person that will take on this ministry. (Not that I'm planning to leave)
  • If I just raise support from people who know me and want to support ME, then when I leave, most likely their support leaves and the new director has to start from scratch.
  • If I can build sponsorships and a Home Team of people that want to support the camping ministry, then when I leave their support remains for the next person.
  • I want to start something that God will use long after I am gone.

Funding Goals:

  • $150,000 total
  • $50,000 in sponsorships (currently $5,000)
  • $50,000 in scholarships (currently $50,000/year)
  • $50,000 in home team support (currently $0)

prayer request: Dobson LB Study

I've been meeting with some coaches from Dobson High School. We are going through a Bible study written by a former coach. It is called Legacy Builders. It is a great resource for coaches and our ministry at FCA.

I ask for prayer concerning the group. Our discussions have been good. They are engaged and just the fact that they are showing up consistently at 6 AM on Wed. is encouraging. I know their schedules are busy. My prayer is that this study does not become routine. I'm asking you to pray that the scripture we study will impact their lives and would help change their coaching, parenting, husband-ing or wife-ing, and daily relationship with God.

Today we talked about not grinding out our Christianity and coaching, but like Mary in Luke 10:38 drawing near to Jesus and hearing his words. The title of the study was "Be to do" not "Do to be." We want to start with a heart change, and let our renewed spirit direct what we "do."

I think many of us have it backwards. We may be trying to force the relationship thinking, I have to be doing this, or I feel bad because I'm not doing this. We are trying to encourage one another to stop thinking about what we need to be doing, and start thinking about just listening to what God wants to teach us and how He wants to change us.

If He is teaching and changing us, we will know what to do.
